Grove Tavern, South Wimbledon - Planning application

A application has been received by Merton Council to re-develop the Grove Tavern opposite South Wimbledon tube station as a Tesco Metro.

A travesty and no mistake.  And what does it say about Tesco that they already have a store a whopping 0.1 miles away?

Incidentally, for all the good it will probably do, I have personally submitted my views on this move.Tesco don't need planning permission to change the pub to a supermarket.  What they do need is permission to make all the changes they want to do - such as massive steel bollards on a narrow pavement; installation of a cash machine on a narrow pavement; outside freezers which will only increase noise pollution and so on.  Comments can be added until this Saturday so if you have a view, use this chance.  A Tesco is not completely guaranteed:http://www.merton.gov.uk/living/planning/planningapplications/representations.htm

It's hard to imagine even the greedy Tescos can think there will be money to be made when they have a good sized 24 hour shop at the petrol station just moments away!Poor Wimbledon is viewed by all the big chains as just another opportunity to milk the locals. They and the property developers have no affiliation with the place, and are happy to see all character removed in the interests of profit. I still have a copy of the community plan for Wimbledon, from the 1980s. It was never implemented of course, but is still inspiring. If too late.I didn't realise how angry I was about all this until now! Can't see us growing free food in public spaces!! Too many well off and temporary people to care?? Or am I wrong?

I think that something as important as this could be dealt with more effectively with an ePetition - seehttp://petitions.merton.gov.uk/epetition_core/community/page/indexI am amazed that there are currently no live petitions for the entire Merton Council area.  I would raise it myself but currently do not reside in Merton; I have raised several in Bedfordshire where I now live and they have been effective.  For sure far more people will sign up to a Petition than they will write a wordy email and the Council know this hence they do not promote ePetitions and dislike that they are mandatory.Mike (Biggleswade - ex Merton born)
